Bill Sapa, the proprietor of the Blue Moon Bar and Nite Club in Columbia Falls and the coach of the Columbia Falls High School baseball team, has died, according to several sources. Sapa was discovered lifeless in his reclining chair this morning. There were no other details provided.

Sapa had deep roots in Columbia Falls. He was a notable baseball player for the Glacier Twins under coach Julio Delgado and a college baseball player for the University of New Mexico. The New York Yankees picked him as a left-handed pitcher, but he never played professionally.

Bill Sapa returned home to help his family rather than pursue professional basketball, he said in an interview last year. Ray Johnsrud and Jim Sapa are the namesakes of the Sapa-Johnsrud baseball fields in Columbia Falls. They were killed in August 1984 when a train hit them at the 12th Avenue Railroad crossing. At the time of the collision, both were 16 years old. Bill’s older brother was Jim Sapa.

Sapa was tasked with coaching the Columbia Falls High School baseball club in their maiden season. The squad had only played two games in their inaugural season. The Sapa family has historically supported baseball, sports, and a variety of other community organizations. Bill’s parents, Charlotte and Dick Sapa purchased the Blue Moon from Lily Brash in 1972.

Dick and Charlotte both passed away in 2021

The Club was built in 1947 as one of the numerous watering holes that sprang up during the construction of the Hungry Horse Dam. When they first took over the pub, the couple worked feverishly to repair it. Charlotte said in a 2019 interview that the front door was a piece of plywood with a padlock on it. With their three children, Bill, Charlene, and Jimmy, they lived in a small flat behind the pub.

Dick and Charlotte both passed away in 2021. Their portrait can be found on the side of the Blue Moon. Today, the pub and its rodeo grounds are a well-known landmark in Columbia Falls. Thousands of people attend the rodeo every Thursday night during the summer. Bill also ran the family farm, which welcomes visitors to Columbia Falls with open space and a herd of black angus cows. Tuesday, the bar was closed.
