Grandmother Beryl Purdy, 86, was found critically injured and died on her property in Broomfield, near Bridgwater, Somerset, on Monday. The family of a church guardian believed to have been killed by an escaped mental health patient has paid tribute to the “dear wife, mother, and grandmother”.
Her family issued a statement through Avon and Somerset police saying she was “a big part of the town” and they would miss her. A man in his thirties was arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Law after disappearing from a mental health unit, but not from a secure facility. He was in no condition to be interviewed by police about the death or to be detained in police custody, doctors decided. Avon and Somerset Police have launched a murder investigation, which is being conducted by the main crime investigation team.

In a statement issued through the force, Ms. Purdy’s family said: “As a family, we are devastated to have lost a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. ‘Bez was a caring person who would help anyone in need and he was a very important part of the town, having been a guardian of the church for 20 years. “She will be sorely missed and we are all struggling to understand why this happened to such a lovely person.” The force said the family is being supported by specially trained family liaison officers. It is not the first tragedy to strike the family of the former church director, since her daughter, Alison, an Avon and Somerset police officer, died in 2012 at the age of 46 after a horse riding accident.
The retiree, who took care of the reserves for the city council, served for 20 years as guardian of the church of Santa María y Todos los Santos. Parishioners organized a collection for her when she resigned two years ago. She was the primary caretaker for her husband, who is said to have mobility issues and is “distressed.” Mrs. Purdy was found seriously injured on her property in Broomfield, near Taunton, Somerset, at 5:45 p.m. m. of Monday. The police officers called to the burglary tried to save her, but they could not revive her, and she died on the spot.

Purdy attacker arrested
The two men who found Ms. Purdy’s body on Monday afternoon are understood to have called the police. Her attacker had already left the scene on foot, but he was tracked down by a police helicopter and a dog unit, and arrested three hours later in a nearby forest. He has since been sectioned and transferred to a secure mental health unit after doctors ruled that he was unfit to be interviewed about the grandmother’s death. Avon and Somerset Police said a mandatory conduct referral had been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in respect of action taken following a missing person report on Monday. An IOPC spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We can confirm that we have received a referral from Avon and Somerset Police. We are now evaluating the referral to determine what action may be required by the IOPC’.
