Ben Mumford and Charlie Wiki – Biography
Ben Mumford, 50, and his son Charlie, 24, were flying their Cessna plane when problems occurred in Merriton, South Australia, at 4.10pm on Sunday. South African police received reports that the plane had hit power lines and crashed into a field. Charlie died at the scene while his father suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital Monday morning. The father and son are both from Redhill, in the state’s mid-north, where Mumford works as a farmer. Mumford leaves behind his wife Bronwyn and two other children, Lachlan and David.

A bystander is understood to have suffered burns to his hands and arms after trying to help the men out of the downed plane. They were taken to the hospital. Australia’s Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation into the tragedy and investigators are expected to be at the scene on Monday. “The ATSB has launched a transport safety investigation into an accident involving a Cessna light aircraft in Merriton, SA on Sunday afternoon,” the statement read. “The ATSB is preparing to deploy a team of transportation safety investigators with experience in aircraft operations, maintenance and engineering to the crash site on Monday.” “Once on site, they will carry out a series of evidence collection activities, including mapping the site, examining the wreckage and recovering aircraft components for further examination at the ATSB technical facilities in Canberra”. The ATSB has also urged anyone with information to come forward. “Anyone who witnessed the accident, or who has video footage of the aircraft at any stage of its flight, is asked to get in touch via the witness form on our website: atsb.gov.au/witness as soon as possible. ”
