Bailey Clifford Smith, a teenager has been charged with murder four days after the body of a Geelong father was found outside a church. Paul Grapsas, 40, left his home on Western Beach Road, near the center of Geelong, southwest of Melbourne, last Thursday for a late-night walk with his dog and never came home. Bailey Clifford Smith, 18, from the Geelong suburb of Belmont, appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with his murder. Mr Grapsas’ battered body was tragically discovered lying next to his car outside a church on nearby Malone Street, not far from his home. It was his pregnant wife, Jessica, who made the gruesome discovery after going out to look for him when her dog returned without him. The father of two had died from significant head injuries. Last week, Homicide Squad Detective Sergeant Tony Hupfeld said Grapsas often walked his dog at night. Forensic police swarmed the area over the weekend, dusting vehicles for fingerprints and searching the area for clues.

Some neighbors claimed Grapsas may have been attacked by someone breaking into vehicles. Police also searched security cameras at local businesses and homes in a painstaking search for clues about how and why he died. Locals told the Geelong Advertiser the area had been plagued by homelessness and anti-social behaviour. Some locals suggested that an abandoned nursing home next to the Grapsas’ home was being used by homeless people, the newspaper reported. “There used to be many more drug-affected and homeless people in the area, but the recent tunnel work has driven them away,” said one business owner. On Sunday, a small bouquet of flowers was placed next to a rock in the street near where Mr. Grapsas was found dead, a few meters from where the couple and his two daughters lived. On Sunday night, Mr Grapsas’ grieving wife Jessica posted a photo of the happy couple on their wedding day almost seven years ago.

Grapsas was described as a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend in a statement released by the family this week. “A man of integrity who was happiest when he was surrounded by his family, friends and church community,” the statement said. ‘He was a devoted father of two young children who was expecting a third on the way and had just received a promotion at his workplace. ‘Known and respected in the community, a skilled sportsman who loved golf, fishing and video games. “Paul will be deeply missed by all those he loved and who loved him.” Grapsas’ death also sparked an outpouring of tributes from devastated friends. ‘It was a great honor to meet this kind, honest and great father and family man. Paul was a great Christian man. Paul is now under God’s care and heaven has gained another beautiful angel. “I feel very privileged to have met a great man,” wrote a friend. Another added: “Paul was such a beautiful, loving man.”
