Bailey Camilleri, 22, appeared in Penrith District Court on Thursday where he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison for the death of Gemma Thompson. The P-plater had previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death in the crash in Llandilo, northwest of Penrith, on November 2, 2021, 7 News reported. The collision instantly killed the 28-year-old educator when Camilleri’s truck crossed the center line and crashed into oncoming traffic. Forensic analysis of Camilleri’s phone revealed that he connected to Bluetooth before leaving work on the day of the accident and began streaming an episode of the American comedy show. The data found that he broadcast the program for about eleven minutes, before Ms Thompson was murdered at 7.27am. Mr. Camilleri’s lawyers argued that he was driving tired at the time of the incident.

Investigation Report
Judge Sophie Beckett dismissed his arguments and ruled that the cause of the fatal accident was Camilleri’s distraction with his phone. “This sentence should reinforce to all road users that driving is a privilege that should only be available to those who abide by the rules of the road,” she said. He will now spend 17 months in prison before being eligible for parole. “This offense was born of youth, inexperience and the common belief of young people that they are immortal,” he said. The court heard various victim impact statements from family and friends of Ms. Thompson, including her fiancé, Max Cunningham. The couple were expected to marry just two weeks after Ms Thompson’s death. “We had been practicing our first dance in the house we just bought,” Cunningham told the court. “We were both sure that this was not just one of the best chapters of our lives, but the beginning of something brilliant and everlasting.”Camilleri, who has been detained since July 4, will be released on December 3, 2024.
