Bachan Kaur Athwal Wiki – Bachan Kaur Athwal Biography

Bachan Kaur Athwal, 86, a grandmother who planned for her daughter-in-law to be slain in an “honor killing” in India has been released.

Bachan Kaur Athwal, now 86, was sentenced to life in prison in 2007 for ordering the murder of Surjit Athwal, 27, after discovering she was having an affair and intended to divorce her son. Surjit, from Hayes in West London, went missing on a trip to India in 1998, and Athwal, then 70, was sentenced to death alongside her son Sukhdave. In June of last year, MailOnline revealed that the Parole Board had recommended that Athwal, who is in bad health and suffering from dementia, be freed on license.

A month later, we reported that the Parole Board judgment had been appealed by the Justice Secretary, who claimed the panel’s decision placed too much emphasis on “health factors” and “failed to consider appropriately risk-related evidence.” Raab argued that the panel ‘gave undue weight’ to protective circumstances relating to Athwal’s age and health. He further said that it neglected to “take into account the non-disclosure of information about victims.” Despite his appeal, Mr. Raab’s arguments were dismissed by the Parole Board.

Athwal was freed from prison in August of last year and is reported to be being cared for by family under specific conditions, according to MailOnline. After being found guilty of Surjit’s honor killing, Athwal and his son, Sukhdave Athwal, were sentenced to life in prison. When she was convicted of murder in 2007, Athwal was one of the oldest individuals in the country, at the age of 70. Surjit vanished in December 1998 while flying from the United Kingdom to India for a family wedding.

The young bride, who was forcibly married to Sukhdave at the age of 16, was later murdered, although her body was never located. Surjit was treated like a slave by Athwal and his family, who conspired to assassinate her because they were afraid she would taint the family’s reputation. Mum-of-two Surjit lived with the family in Hayes, West London, and was allegedly abused there. Sukhdave purchased a £100,000 insurance policy for his wife on the day she left for India, but it never paid out. He then divorced Surjit while she was away, claiming she had deserted him, and married someone else.

Prior to her release, the Justice Secretary maintained that Athwal remained a danger to society. She hit her daughter during a jail visit in May of last year and assaulted a prison service member and another inmate on two separate occasions. The Prison Offender Manager testified in Athwal’s appeal that she had displayed no signs of aggressiveness prior to the development of dementia. The assaults were dubbed ‘low level’ since no one was hurt. According to medical examinations, the old Athwal ‘would be tough to handle in exactly the same way as any other person suffering from dementia and no more’.
