Austin Sherrell, 23, claims he has been assaulted three times since the new year and that after requesting worker’s compensation, his hours were cut and he was fired from his job at Vons, a supermarket giant in Southern California and Nevada. California store clerk fired following three assaults
Police were called back to the store, but by the time they arrived, the suspect had fled, just as he had in the previous instance. The third attack occurred on April 1 when a customer, who was presumably inebriated, allegedly harassed female shoppers. When the employee went to get his manager and a security guard, the man got in Sherrell’s face. He’s cussing me out, he’s threatening my life,” Sherrell claimed. “I step back, and he comes back in my face. I take another step back. I shove him off of me the third time I defend myself.” Sherrell said that after the three assaults, he applied for worker’s compensation because he was having nightmares and panic attacks and was instructed to take time off. When Sherrell returned to work, he discovered that his hours had been reduced, and on April 10, he was suspended awaiting an investigation. According to Sherrell’s father, Adam, the store fired him nine days later because he touched a customer.
“On April 3rd, my son requested workers’ compensation paperwork because he had been having nightmares and panic attacks since he was nearly stabbed.” My kid was suspended seven days later, on April 10, pending an investigation. “On April 19, he was called in and fired because he touched a customer,” Adam said of his son’s dismissal. Sherrell’s father set up a GoFundMe page in order to earn $5,000 to help his son pay his monthly obligations after he was “wrongfully terminated.” As of early Friday, it had generated approximately $2,000 in revenue. Sherrell has no intentions to return to Vons, but he says he will miss the good customers he has met throughout his time with the company.
