Auriol Grey of Bradbury Place, Huntingdon, was jailed for three years after being found guilty of manslaughter. At one trial, the women passed each other in opposite directions on the pavement of the Cambridgeshire city ring road on the afternoon of October 20.

Celia Ward was struck by a car and killed
Celia Ward, a 77-year-old cyclist who was riding on the pavement. On being shouted at, Ward fell into the road, where she was struck by a car and killed.
The incident was captured on CCTV which included sound, and Gray could be heard yelling at Mrs Ward, a retired midwife, to “get off the [expletive] pavement”. Prosecutor Simon Spence KC said the defendant was “angry at the presence of a cyclist on a pavement” and gestured towards Mrs Ward, from Wyton, who fell into the path of a car.
Jurors heard that the vehicle had “no possibility of stopping or taking any action to avoid it” and Ms Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. Gray left before emergency services arrived and went to Sainsbury’s where he bought groceries.
The trial was told that police could not say “categorically” whether the pavement was a shared cycle lane. Cambridgeshire County Council later reiterated that and said it would review the location, but in his sentencing comments Judge Sean Enright said it was a shared cycle path.
In sentencing Gray, Judge Enright said that she was “territorial on the pavement” and that she “resented” that the cyclist was there. The trial heard that Gray had cerebral palsy and had vision problems, but the judge said: “These actions are not explained by the disability.”
He said that she had given a “dishonest account in the interview” and that “there was not a word about remorse until today.”
Judge Enright added that “the consideration of other road users is the lesson of this tragic case.” He said the victim impact statements had been “painful reading”, with Ms Ward’s husband of 53 years, David, stating that he “rarely goes a day without thinking about her”.

Her daughter, Gillian Hayter, described her mother’s death as “senseless and unnecessary” and paid tribute to the police officers who were “a credit to the uniform they wear.” The driver of the car that struck Ms Ward said “there was always a part of me that felt guilty” and that her whole life had “turned upside down” after the incident.
Miranda Moore KC, who said in extenuation of Gray that “there was no intent to cause harm or an evident risk of harm”, said she would appeal the ruling. Detective Sergeant Mark Dollard of Cambridgeshire Police described it as a “difficult and tragic case”.
“Everyone will have their own opinion of cyclists on the sidewalks and bike lanes, but what is clear is that Grey’s response to Celia’s presence on a pedal bike was totally disproportionate and ultimately found to be it was illegal, resulting in Celia’s untimely and unnecessary death. “I hope it is a stark reminder to all road users to take care and be considerate of one another.”
