Audriana Pearson, a month short of her 13th birthday, was killed while sharing a bed with two friends for a sleepover when 17 bullets were fired at a Birmingham home early this morning in what police say was a shooting from A vehicle. The incident occurred at around 1:51 a.m. m. Wednesday in the 500 block of 16th Avenue N.W., said Sgt. Monica Law. Officers from the East Precinct were called to the scene on a report of a person shot, Law said. When officers arrived, family members told them that a girl was sleeping in the bed and that she had been shot. Firefighters pronounced the child dead at the scene. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the girl as 12-year-old Audriana Pearson.
There are no suspects currently in custody. The girl would have turned 13 on January 17, Mayor Randall Woodfin said. She was a seventh grader at Erwin High School, according to the Jefferson County school system. Now her family is spending this season making arrangements for her daughter,” Woodfin posted on Facebook. Woodfin said 17 bullets were fired at the house. The police, he said, will have all available resources to find those responsible for her death.

She was the victim of a drive-by, another of our children was stolen from us due to the willful and reckless behavior of others,” Woodfin tweeted. There is very little to rejoice about in homes where laughter has been silenced by gunshots, and that breaks my heart,” added the mayor. “I spoke to Minnie’s mom this morning. All she wanted for Christmas was a pink iPad and AirPods.”
A woman who answered the door of the house where Audriana was shot said the family was not ready to comment. The inability to control one’s anger and have peaceful conflict management continues to plague our city,” she read in a police statement.
“Families are left hurt, angry, and suffering at the hands of others and we are tired of our communities being devastated by senseless killing. No family deserves to face the murder of a loved one; especially when the victim is a child who should have had many more years to learn and grow.”

Detectives will work to gather all the information they can; however, our best work is when we work together to bring those who harm our children to justice.
