Asia Calabrese-Lewis the suspect – Authorities in Georgia have charged a mother with criminal murder and child maltreatment after her 1-year-old daughter was discovered dead in a pond last week.
According to a press release issued by the Sandy Springs Police Department on May 12, Calabrese-Lewis, 24, was arrested and lodged in the Fulton County Jail. Officers were summoned to the Concourse business complex in Sandy Springs, an Atlanta suburb, around 6:40 p.m. on May 11, when Lewis was experiencing “some type of episode,” according to police. The child’s father arrived and asked where the baby was,” according to the announcement. Lewis allegedly then stated, “that the baby was deceased in a pool.”
According to police, a major search was undertaken, and 1-year-old Nirvana Oliver was eventually located in a body of water. The girl was taken to Atlanta’s Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. According to 11 Alive, 13WMAZ, and Fox 5 Atlanta, officers attended to a business the day before regarding a welfare check concerning probable child abuse involving Lewis and an unspecified juvenile. However, no charges were brought since police allegedly stated that they did not believe a crime had been committed. After escorting the mother and juvenile back to their residence and contacting the child’s father, police made a referral to the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS), according to 11 Alive.

According to a statement received by 13WMAZ, DFCS is working with law enforcement on the death investigation. We opened a case and attempted a home visit on May 11,” according to the statement. “This is a heartbreaking loss, and our hearts go out to Nirvana’s loved ones.” The circumstances behind Nirvana’s death were not revealed, however, her grandfather, Kenneth Oliver, stated that Lewis departed with his granddaughter on Thursday evening and returned alone, according to 11 Alive. According to an arrest warrant acquired by Fox 5 Atlanta, Lewis was seen on security camera arriving at a nearby retention pond around 90 minutes before authorities recovered Nirvana’s body. The mother was spotted going away naked after the pair had been out of frame for several minutes. The family has subsequently set up a GoFundMe campaign to aid with funeral expenses for Nirvana, who would have turned two on June 18. As we continue to support our brother/son in his time of grief, we ask for donations to help him fund her memorial as well as funds to allow him to take some time off work to grieve the loss of his baby girl,” reads the fundraiser, which was started by Nirvana’s father’s loved ones. According to Kenneth Oliver, his granddaughter “lit up any room she entered.” Authorities have not revealed the reason for her death. According to authorities, the investigation is still ongoing. It’s unknown whether Lewis has entered a plea or hired a lawyer to speak on her behalf.
