Ashlee Cheatham was arrested Tuesday night and charged with a series of felonies, including one count of sexual abuse of a child under 12 and one count of making or distributing any type of obscene material or child pornography, authorities announced. Cheatham also faces one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and felony violation of the Oklahoma Computer Crime Law. He and Cheatham developed a relationship and began dating, and she eventually “became his girlfriend” and moved in with him and his 3-year-old daughter. It was unclear how long they were dating, but at some point in their relationship, the father began to suspect that Cheatham was up to something nasty and decided to look into it. The night before, while Cheatham was asleep, the father checked her cell phone and found “disturbing images and video of her 3-year-old daughter” from police, police wrote in the statement.

Police did not clarify exactly what the images or videos on Cheatham’s phone allegedly represented, nor did they say how many files were allegedly discovered. “Many of us are parents, police officers here, and also members of the community. If you got that little sinking feeling, obviously trust your gut. Do a thorough background check on everyone who will be caring for your children,” Lt. Low told ABC affiliate KOCO-TV of Oklahoma City. Police body camera video obtained by KOCO shows several officers detaining a scantily clad Cheatham in the couple’s shared apartment. The handcuffed woman can be seen crying as officers led her out of the apartment. “It was all very disturbing, which is why we made the arrest that day,” Lt. Low reportedly said. Cheatham had reportedly applied for a job as a teaching assistant at Nicoma Park Elementary School and she was “in the process of being hired” prior to her arrest. In a statement to KOCO, a spokesperson for the district said they made a “mutual decision to end the hiring process.” “The suspect never worked for the district, he never received a paycheck and has never been with any of our students,” the statement read, KOCO reported. Cheatham was being held at the Payne County Jail as of Saturday morning, records show. A judge also issued a protection order prohibiting him from contacting the alleged victim.
