The Mexican woman killed in the drug cartel’s crossfire during the kidnapping of four Americans last week has been identified as 33-year-old church official Arely Servando who worked with children at a summer school.
Arely Servando found herself in the middle of a terrifying ambush on March 3, when Latavia “Tay” McGee, Shaeed Woodard, Zindell Brown, and Eric James Williams were kidnapped in crime-ridden Matamoros. Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villareal revealed that she was struck while she was a block and a half away from the withering hail of gunfire from the Gulf Cartel’s Grupo Escorpiones, the Daily Mail reported.

Servando, a graduate of the National College of Technical Professional Education, worked with children at the Summer Bible School and was a member of the Association of Young Ambassadors of Pentecostal Power, the outlet said. Arelita, as she affectionately called her, was my vice president along with many other things,” the association’s president, Priscila Andrade, told El Universal, according to the newspaper. “My little sister, best friend, and partner,” she added.
On Thursday, the secret faction of the notorious cartel apologized and handed over five members they say were responsible for the attack in broad daylight. Scorpions Group said it “decided to hand over those who were directly involved and responsible for the events” related to the kidnapping, according to a letter leaked to the Associated Press by a Tamaulipas state law enforcement source. McGee and Williams were found injured in a dirty shack on Tuesday, but Woodard and Brown died. Meanwhile, Mexican authorities are investigating a possible drug trafficking motive for the kidnapping.
