Apprentice jockey Mikaela Claridge Wiki – Bio
Apprentice jockey Mikaela Claridge, 22, was thrown from her horse after she spooked while riding on a sandy path behind the main park in the dark on the morning of August 30, 2019. A horse racing club has been heavily fined for the death of a young jockey after her horse spooked and threw her. Cranbourne Turf Club Inc, in south-east Melbourne, was fined $250,000 after pleading guilty in Victoria County Court to the charge of failing to ensure that a person other than an employee is not exposed to health risks and security.
The apprentice jockey had returned to the track after recovering from a serious spinal injury. She took her first win at her home track in Echuca, north Victoria, just a year before the accident, taking her last win at the Sale Turf Club in July 2018. Her last three races were on August 27 at Mornington Racecourse, where she finished fourth and sixth twice. In a death notice released by her family, Ms Claridge was described as having a “mischievous humor” and “a smile that will live in our hearts forever.

Investigation found that there were several features on the track that could have startled a horse
She was riding with her training partner as part of a Friday morning training routine when the accident occurred. Her riding partner was also thrown from her horse but was unharmed, while Ms Claridge died on the spot even after she was attended by a paramedic on the course. A WorkSafe investigation found that there were several features on the track that could have startled a horse in the dark. These included overhanging tree limbs, standing water, and other horses or wildlife near the track. The court heard that Cranbourne Turf Club could reduce the risks by installing reflectors along the trail or limiting cyclists to using them only during the day.
WorkSafe Health and Safety CEO Narelle Beer said Wednesday that the incident demonstrated how important it was to assess risks and address them. “While some security measures, such as changing operating hours, may seem minor, failing to implement them can have unimaginably painful consequences,” said Dr. Beer. ‘WorkSafe will continue to investigate and hold accountable anyone who fails in their duty to ensure that their workplaces and work practices are safe and without health risks.’ Two years before her death.
