Anusan Arumainayagam, a fast BMW driver who was traveling 75mph in a 30mph zone when he killed a motorcycle in a hit-and-run accident, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. Kyle Jones, 23, of Solihull, became entangled beneath Anusan Arumainayagam’s vehicle.
The father of three died in the hospital as a result of his injuries. Arumainayagam, who fled the scene after the crash, was sentenced to prison after admitting to causing death by unsafe driving. On March 22, 2023, the defendant, who was driving a BMW with three passengers along Audley Road, Stechford, Birmingham, lost control of his vehicle after colliding with a parked car.
Prosecutor Lisa Hancox told Birmingham Crown Court that Mr. Jones, of Solihull, was riding a motorcycle in front of him and another bike rider behind him. The defendant collided with a Mercedes that was parked on the road. The collision forced Mr. Jones’ BMW to spin and catch up with him, ‘catapulting’ him off his bike.

Mr. Jones was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, according to Miss Hancox, but died the next morning from various injuries. She stated that the defendant was traveling at 75mph before the collision on Audley Road, which had a 30mph speed restriction and featured residential homes and shops. Arumainayagam, 24, of Wolverhampton, who had previously admitted causing death by hazardous driving, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and barred from driving for six years and three months.
Judge Dean Kershaw stated in a passing sentence, ‘Kyle Jones was a loving father-of-three and the eldest of five siblings.’He was characterized as a proud father and a well-liked member of his family. The road was well-lit, and there was nothing wrong with the car.
‘What went wrong was that you pushed the accelerator way too hard. You were doing 75 mph, which is two and a half times the speed limit.’ ‘The court claimed Arumainayagam had ‘misjudged’ the Mercedes and went on to add the ‘only reason that this death occurred was that he was traveling too fast’.
He further admitted that Arumainayagam did not report the incident to authorities at the time and ‘decided to wait,’ turning himself into Perry Barr police station the next day. Defending attorney Nigel Wilkins stated, ‘He could have reported it sooner, but he did report it within 24 hours.’ He requested that the judge consider his age, immaturity, and lack of driving experience.
