Antonio Loiacono the victim – The best friend of an Adelaide footballer who died after a collision on the pitch recalled their last conversation together.
It came as family and friends gathered Thursday to remember Antonio Loiacono, 20, after he suffered a fatal injury during a game on April 23. The Adelaide lore has been remembered as a ‘lifelong lover of the game’ and a loyal supporter of the Sydney Swans.
Loiacono’s funeral was held at the Harrison Rivergum Chapel, and a crowd of mourners also gathered at the Hope Valley Sporting Club oval, where the service was broadcast live. Antonio’s best friend detailed his last conversation, which rarely happened. He accidentally called him a few days before his sudden death while his phone was in his pocket. The last words he said to me were ‘I love you,'” the best friend told the crowd. I couldn’t have been more grateful to get to hear it for the last time.” He said the popular soccer player was one of a group of 21 local men who had promised each other in recent years that they would be “brothers by choice.” Addressing them directly, he said ‘Although we’ve lost a brother today, we’ve gained a couple hundred more through him’.

Antonio was the eldest son of the Loiacono family who moved to Hope Valley in the Sydney City of Churches when he was in primary school. His heartbroken father, Sal Loiacono, described him as “one of the best guys in life” who “never had a bad word to say about anyone.” We’ve never been this close,” Loiacono said. He revealed that his son received “quite a few blows to the head” from soccer.
Loiacono also donated his brain and organs to sports research in an attempt to better understand the impact of sports injuries like the one that ultimately took his life.
“He lives in six people,” said his father. ‘Whoever has his heart is a lucky person.’ His father also told the mourners that he will always cherish memories with his two sons, Antonio and Jack, whom he bonded with over his love of sports, motorcycles and, the Sydney Swans. He recalled his last body surfing with his eldest son at the filming location for the TV series Home and Away in Palm Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches, which the 20-year-old watched “religiously.”
