Antonio Almaraz Wiki – Antonio Almaraz Biography
Antonio Almaraz, a deputy sheriff in San Antonio, Texas, was arrested and fired from his job this week after authorities allege he left his two-month-old baby in a hot car for several hours. A spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that Antonio Almaraz, 31, has been charged with injury to a child, abandonment of a child with intent to return and child endangerment. An investigation began Monday around 2 p.m. when hospital staff reported the incident to the sheriff’s office. Almaraz had taken his son to a routine pediatric appointment that morning and returned home a little more than an hour later. That’s when, authorities allege, Almaraz turned off his car and entered the house without the baby, according to the statement. About three hours later, the baby was discovered unconscious inside the vehicle, investigators said.
Antonio Almaraz is 31 years old.
An ambulance reportedly took the baby to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. AccuWeather reported that the temperature was 98 degrees Fahrenheit the day the baby was found. According to the sheriff’s office, Almaraz allegedly gave conflicting statements during questioning. “Given the heightened awareness in the community about leaving children unattended in vehicles, there is absolutely no valid excuse for this to have occurred,” said Sheriff Javier Salazar. “My family and I are praying for the best possible outcome for this precious baby.” Almaraz, who was hired on Feb. 20, received “a termination order” from the sheriff’s office; he was still on probation at the time. The now-former deputy “cannot appeal his probationary dismissal and is not eligible to be rehired regardless of the outcome of the criminal case,” the statement reads. Almaraz is being held in jail on $80,000 bail, according to the sheriff’s office. It is unclear whether he has pleaded guilty or hired an attorney to speak on his behalf.
