Cops identified 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae Tuesday morning as the sole suspect in a Monday night shooting at Michigan State University that left three students dead and five others wounded. He was arrested in 2019 for possessing weapons without a concealed carry permit, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz told Bridge Michigan on Tuesday. And a Lansing neighbor told Bridge Michigan on Tuesday that police were called to McRae’s home about a year ago following complaints that he was firing a gun from his front door. Court records show that McRae was initially charged with a felony in district court, but later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in circuit court. He was paroled in 2019 and discharged in 2021.
On June 7, 2019, a police officer found McRae smoking on the back steps of an abandoned building at 1:55 AM. m. and approached him for questioning, according to the officer’s testimony. McRae acknowledged to the officer that he had a .380 semi-automatic pistol, which was registered to him, without a concealed-carry permit, court documents show. The police officer said he searched McRae and found a loaded gun in his pants pocket and a loaded magazine in his upper chest pocket.
McRae told the officer that he had left his house around 1:30 a.m. to go to the nearby Quality Dairy, according to an affidavit. Before leaving his home, he pocketed the gun “for protection,” despite knowing he shouldn’t have carried it without a concealed carry permit. McRae said he bought the gun in March 2019 at Capital Discount and was trying to get a concealed carry permit. As part of the plea agreement, McRae agreed to “relinquish the firearm he possessed in this incident,” the documents show.
McRae had four driving charges while his license was suspended, Gautz said. Court records indicate that he had several run-ins with local police for speeding, driving without insurance and other motor vehicle-related crimes. He pleaded guilty to those charges in Eaton County in 2006 and 2008 and in Ingham County in 2007 and 2008.
After McRae committed suicide Tuesday, police recovered a gun and are still investigating whether it was the firearm used in the crime, MSU Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman told reporters at a briefing Tuesday by morning. McRae had “no affiliation” with the university, Rozman added, noting that the suspect was not a current or former student, professor, or staff member. Police say the shooter, believed to be McRae, first opened fire around 8:30 p.m. at Berkey Hall, an academic building on the north side of campus that borders downtown East Lansing. Authorities responding to emergency calls from Berkey Hall found “several students who were injured,” Rozman said, confirming that two students died in the academic building.
As police responded to the shooting at Berkey Hall, they received additional reports of another shooting at the MSU Union building just to the west, and they believe the suspect fled on foot. Another student died there in the Union, Rozman confirmed. McRae, the suspect, was located around 11:35 p.m. about five miles from campus in a building near Lake Lansing and Larch streets, Rozman said, explaining that McRae died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police released surveillance footage of the suspected shooter at 11:18 p.m.
“It was shortly after we posted it that an alert citizen recognized it,” Rozman said. “…That was exactly what we were trying to achieve by posting that image.”
