Anthony Dwayne McRae Wiki – Bio

Cops identified 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae Tuesday morning as the sole suspect in a Monday night shooting at Michigan State University that left three students dead and five others wounded. McRae was a Lansing resident who shot himself after being confronted by police off campus early Tuesday morning after responding to a phone call.

Anthony Dwayne McRae was 43 years old.

MSU shooter pleaded guilty to a firearm charge in 2019, court records show

He was arrested in 2019 for possessing weapons without a concealed carry permit, Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz told Bridge Michigan on Tuesday. And a Lansing neighbor told Bridge Michigan on Tuesday that police were called to McRae’s home about a year ago following complaints that he was firing a gun from his front door. Court records show that McRae was initially charged with a felony in district court, but later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in circuit court. He was paroled in 2019 and discharged in 2021.

On June 7, 2019, a police officer found McRae smoking on the back steps of an abandoned building at 1:55 AM. m. and approached him for questioning, according to the officer’s testimony. McRae acknowledged to the officer that he had a .380 semi-automatic pistol, which was registered to him, without a concealed-carry permit, court documents show. The police officer said he searched McRae and found a loaded gun in his pants pocket and a loaded magazine in his upper chest pocket.

McRae told the officer that he had left his house around 1:30 a.m. to go to the nearby Quality Dairy, according to an affidavit. Before leaving his home, he pocketed the gun “for protection,” despite knowing he shouldn’t have carried it without a concealed carry permit. McRae said he bought the gun in March 2019 at Capital Discount and was trying to get a concealed carry permit. As part of the plea agreement, McRae agreed to “relinquish the firearm he possessed in this incident,” the documents show.

McRae had four driving charges while his license was suspended, Gautz said. Court records indicate that he had several run-ins with local police for speeding, driving without insurance and other motor vehicle-related crimes. He pleaded guilty to those charges in Eaton County in 2006 and 2008 and in Ingham County in 2007 and 2008.

After McRae committed suicide Tuesday, police recovered a gun and are still investigating whether it was the firearm used in the crime, MSU Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman told reporters at a briefing Tuesday by morning. McRae had “no affiliation” with the university, Rozman added, noting that the suspect was not a current or former student, professor, or staff member. We have absolutely no idea what the motive was at this point,” he said.

Public records indicate that McRae lived in a 960-foot frame house in the northern part of Lansing that was owned by Michael and Linda McRae. Linda McRae, the mother of Anthony McRae, died in 2020. The house has a large yard that is overgrown and was littered with statues and trash on Tuesday.

Records show the city of Lansing cited the house for code violations regarding litter and weeds nine times between 2013 and 2022, most recently in October. In 2008, the city billed property owners more than $21,000 for on-property garbage collection. Megan Bender lives next door. He found out about the shooting Monday night and started hearing traffic from the scanner, only realizing it was the quiet man who lived next door with his father when police put the suspect’s name and address into the scanner afterward. to say that he had shot himself fatally. After that, the police showed up en masse in the neighborhood and took her father, Mike.

Bender said McRae had moved into the little red house with her father, Mike, about a year ago. They had never interacted; he was quiet, she said, but there was an incident last summer when a neighbor called the police because he was firing a gun out the back door of the house. The police, she said, “did nothing” about it. But Mike, he said, is “a really amazing guy” who is retired from General Motors Corp. and is a Christian, and goes to church every Sunday.

“He doesn’t have a bad part, you know, in his soul,” he said. He and Linda were junk dealers, traveling around the neighborhood in a wood-paneled truck picking up metal from neighbors. Mike and Linda were known throughout the neighborhood,” he said. Across the street, neighbor Heather Fleury said she woke up to the sound of helicopters overhead, then received a text from a friend asking if she was okay.

She said she met Anthony McRae once or twice and would often exchange nods with him when she was riding her bike. He was a nice enough guy, she said, but “he could have had mental problems.” And she noted that she had lost her mother a couple of years ago. Everyone has their breaking point,” she said. She must have had hers. She said that Anthony’s father, Mike, was a joy to be with. He was known as “Happy” in the neighborhood due to his behavior.

Bender, the next-door neighbor, said she believes Anthony McRae was on his way to her house when he killed himself. She is horrified by what happened. What if she had been in the neighborhood, instead of at MSU? And if she had opened fire in the neighborhood at 5 in the afternoon, when her son and her husband were on the street riding a scooter?

“What if she didn’t go somewhere to go crazy?” She said. Michael McRae of Delaware, Anthony McRae’s older brother, told The Detroit Free Press that his brother “withdrew” and was “definitely a loner.” Mike McRae, the father, told NBC News his son became “bitter” after his mother, Linda McRae, died. “He was mourning his mother. He wouldn’t let it go. He got bitter and bitter and bitter,” Mike McRae said. “His mother died and he started to turn mean and mean. He didn’t care about him anymore.”

MSU shooter – suspect identified as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who joined police at MSU Tuesday morning, said she had discussed the shooting with President Joe Biden, who “promises the support of him and the thoughts of an entire nation.

Whitmer mourned the “loss of beautiful souls” and the injured students who continue to fight for their lives. As parents, we tell our children that everything will be fine. We say that all the time. But the truth is that words are not good enough. We must act, and we will,” the governor said.

Police say the shooter, believed to be McRae, first opened fire around 8:30 p.m. at Berkey Hall, an academic building on the north side of campus that borders downtown East Lansing. Authorities responding to emergency calls from Berkey Hall found “several students who were injured,” Rozman said, confirming that two students died in the academic building.

As police responded to the shooting at Berkey Hall, they received additional reports of another shooting at the MSU Union building just to the west, and they believe the suspect fled on foot. Another student died there in the Union, Rozman confirmed. McRae, the suspect, was located around 11:35 p.m. about five miles from campus in a building near Lake Lansing and Larch streets, Rozman said, explaining that McRae died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police released surveillance footage of the suspected shooter at 11:18 p.m.

“It was shortly after we posted it that an alert citizen recognized it,” Rozman said. “…That was exactly what we were trying to achieve by posting that image.”
