The University of Kentucky released a statement on Sunday saying Anne Gieske was studying abroad in South Korea and attended the celebration which was attended by more than 100,000 people and resulted in the deaths of more than 150 as the crowd swelled and hundreds were trampled.

Two other UK students were studying abroad with Gieske, the university president said, but have been contacted and are safe.

Some reports indicate that most of the victims of the incident were in their teens and early twenties.

“Monica and I, and our entire family, are grieving the loss of our niece Anne Marie Gieske. She was a gift from God to our family. We loved her very much,” Wenstrup wrote.

“We are completely devastated and heartbroken at the loss of Anne Marie. She was a shining light loved by all. We ask for her prayers but also respect for our privacy. Anne’s last gift to us was to die in the state of sanctifying grace. We know that one day we will meet her in the kingdom of God,” he added.
Gieske, who celebrated her birthday the day before she was killed, recently opened an Instagram account called Anne_in_Seoul, where she posted pictures of her adventures in the country.

Several of her posts include images of her and Blesi.

An image of her shows her standing behind a large 20th birthday cake near the Han River.

Several of them show her with a group of friends during a hike to Mount Hallasan on Jeju Island, the highest point in the country.

“Caught the sunset at Jusangjeollidae cliffs,” she captioned a post, which included selfies and videos.

Another shows her beaming with arms outstretched at the Cheonjeyeon waterfalls in Jeju, where the group also visited the Olle market.

Gieske also posted an image of a frozen dessert and coffee.

“Coffee dates with friends old and new, candlelight meditation during my stress management class, quick selfie before my geriatric nursing class,” she wrote.

Blesi had recently finished midterms and was celebrating with friends on Saturday when they came across the massive Halloween celebration, the first in two years after COVID restrictions.

He and his friends were among 100,000 revelers partying in the popular nightlife district.

Gieske also attended the party, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto said in a statement Sunday. Two other students and a faculty member also in South Korea during the semester were reported to be safe.

Before Gieske enrolled at the University of Kentucky, he attended Beechwood High School, where he was a member of the band.

Former band manager Austin Bralley said he was still trying to come to terms with her death, Fox 19 reported.

“It was shocking, obviously we take our band very seriously and put many, many hours into it,” Bralley told the outlet. “Then you get to know the students very, very well and they are like your own children.”
