Angela Rees had £2,000 worth of jewelery stolen from her home by her cleaner had to solve the mystery herself after police dropped the case. She became suspicious of agency worker Billi-Jo Pratt when valuable items went missing.
Ms. Rees, 57, was distraught after noticing that earrings, rings and jewelry had disappeared from her home two days after Pratt was inside. She reported it to the police, but they dropped the case after saying there was insufficient evidence to press charges against the 27-year-old Pratt.

Ms. Rees then launched her own investigation, tracing her valuables to a local pawn shop that had security cameras showing Pratt selling her goods to them. After alerting police to the new evidence, officers questioned Pratt, who this time admitted to the crime. Since then, she has been ordered to complete community service and she has been fined.
Margate Magistrates Court was told that Ms Rees’ jewelery had gone missing in April last year, just two days after Pratt had been cleaning her house. The collection, worth approximately £1,825, included gold earrings, a set of sapphire pendants and a yellow sapphire ring.
Mrs. Rees had suspected that her cleaner had committed the crime and Pratt was interviewed by the police. However, the thief told officers that he had no idea who had taken the jewelry, even cheekily suggesting that Ms Rees’s boyfriend might be the culprit.
Police told Ms. Rees that there was insufficient evidence to charge Pratt, and the case against her agency cleaner was dismissed. But Mr. Rees was not satisfied and found it necessary to launch his own investigations into the theft. He visited a local pawn shop, Carthew Jewelers Pawnbrokers shop in Ramsgate, and asked if they had seen any of her jewellery.

Pratt admitted to her crime
The dealer told her that he had recently purchased her jewelry from Pratt and even had security camera footage to prove it. Ms. Rees alerted the police that she again interviewed Pratt, who this time admitted to her crime. The court heard that Pratt had recently fled her home due to domestic violence and was homeless at the time of the robbery.
Her legal representative also insisted that the robbery had been “out of character” for the “trusted” cleaner. Pratt avoided a prison sentence, and magistrates gave him an 18-month community order and told him to do 100 hours of unpaid work and 25 rehabilitation sessions.
The cleaner, who breached a suspended sentence for a driving offense in 2021, is also required to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 costs. Chief Justice Diane August said: ‘This offense was committed in a position of trust and you were under a suspended sentence order at the time.
