Andy Sargent, a long-serving parish councilor, was charged today with strangling his wife of 50 years to death.
Christine Sargent, 73, was rushed to hospital on Saturday morning after being discovered unconscious at the couple’s house in a quiet Buckinghamshire village, but doctors were unable to save her life. Andy Sargent, 77, was detained at the couple’s detached bungalow on Monday night and charged with murder. Mrs. Sargent died as a consequence of neck compression, according to preliminary post-mortem examination results, according to Thames Valley Police.
Neighbors in the Milton Keynes village of Loughton expressed their amazement Friday night, saying they had only known the couple as a “friendly, happy couple.” Police arrived at the cottage at 8 a.m. on Saturday after receiving reports that a woman had been attacked inside a house and discovered Mrs. Sargent unconscious in the bedroom. On Monday, a cordon and a team of officers remained outside. Sargent appeared today in Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in jail.
He is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing at Luton Crown Court. Shveta Bhasin, a neighbor, said it was a tremendous shock to the close-knit community because locals had ‘always seen them as a happy couple’. She stated that they had seen less of Mrs. Sargent since the lockdown and a period of illness, adding, ‘She was hospitalized in December during Christmas and she returned after four months and was immobile, she was bedridden. Every day, nurses came to the residence. ‘We last spoke to Andy a couple of months ago since he was fairly busy going to the hospital. Nobody has seen them much since she returned home.’

Accused of strangling his wife to death
Sargent has been a member of the Loughton and Great Holm Parish Council since 2011, where she currently serves as chair of the planning committee. He accepted the position after retiring from his managerial position at the neighboring Volkswagen UK headquarters, where he had spent over 25 years. The senior was also active in the community, serving as a volunteer ranger for Milton Keynes Parks Trust, a member of the local neighborhood watch, and a member of the graveyard committee at the adjacent All Saints Church.
Another neighbor, Jean, claimed the women on the street would organize coffee mornings at one other’s homes, and Mrs. Sargent, whom she characterized as “very neighborly,” would frequently attend. ‘We were taken aback,’ she admitted. ‘Chris and Andy were both friendly. When we had the scarecrow festival every two years, he used to put on a terrific show. He was quite involved in the parish council.’ According to neighbors, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the end of last year and had a vacation apartment in the Canary Islands that they visited twice a year.
Loughton and Great Holm Parish Council said they were ‘unable to respond at this time’. Thames Valley Detective Chief Inspector Dejan Avramovic Police’s major crime unit said: ‘Christine’s family are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers and our thoughts are with them. ‘On their behalf, we would ask that their privacy is respected at this extremely distressing time for them.’
