Images and videos showed sexual exploitation of children
The court heard that Lenton started a conversation using a messaging service popular with teens in July 2019, telling the boy he was “really hot,” asking him about the color of his underwear and bombarding him with sexually suggestive images.
On 17 January 2022, Lenton arranged to meet the boy, who he believed to be 16 at the time, but was instead met by SA police officers from a child protection task force and arrested. Police then seized Lenton’s mobile phone, computer and a memory card from his Adelaide CBD address and found almost 300,000 images and videos, most of which showed sexual exploitation of children.
Using messaging apps, Lenton had been communicating with children around the world and police found 241 unopened chat messages. Lenton sent a penis photo of him to an unidentified 13-year-old boy in Victoria and had convinced a 12-year-old boy in Florida, USA, to send nude photos of him and his brother of him. .
He was also trying to exchange nude photos with a 13-year-old boy in South Africa. Summing up, Judge Liesl Kudelka said the crimes Lenton had been charged with were just the ‘tip of the iceberg’. Judge Kudelka noted that police were unable to review all of the files he was holding due to the sheer number, but had “exceeded the recommended maximum reviewable file review” to alert the court to such a large amount of material.
Found guilty of violating bail conditions
Lenton was also found guilty of violating bail conditions by using a mobile phone to communicate with a child under the age of 18, but this was not added to his sentence. During sentencing, Lenton wept after acting nonchalantly cleaning her fingernails as the charges were read out, according to Adelaide Advertiser.
In passing sentence, Judge Kudelka said that she had taken into account a mental health evaluation of Lenton, but that she considered him to be at “high risk of recidivism” and that the community needed to be protected.
“Children are vulnerable members of the community,” Judge Kudelka said. ‘That vulnerability is magnified by the Internet, which allows sexual predators like you to contact children without any responsible adult knowing. ‘No one wants sexual predators like you in the community.’
Judge Kudelka imposed a 14-year sentence but reduced it to nine years to account for prison time on concurrent charges. The sentence was retroactive to begin on March 7, 2022 with a non-parole period of seven years.
