Clemency requested for death row inmate in Texas
After the jury rejected his claim of insanity, Thomas was found guilty of killing the young woman and received the death penalty. He knew his actions were wrong, according to the prosecution, and his drug use worsened his mental illness. He has eaten one of his gouged out eyes each time since the murders, his lawyers said, to prevent the government from eavesdropping on his thoughts.
According to Thomas’s lawyers, he will never be mentally fit to be executed on April 5. On Wednesday, they petitioned Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to commute his death sentence to life in prison or grant him clemency so that the courts could determine whether he was competent to prevent death. They were joined by more than 100 faith leaders and numerous mental health professionals in their request.
“Gov. Abbott has the power to stop the spectacle of prison guards leading a blind, mentally incompetent and delusional man into the execution chamber,” said attorney Maurie Levin.
