Amanda Burke, a registered nurse who used to work at a Long Island hospital was arrested for allegedly taking a two-day-old infant out of his bassinet and throwing him face-down back into it. The nurse, named Amanda Burke, was charged on Wednesday with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, according to Suffolk County district attorney Raymond Tierney. The charges, according to the nurse’s lawyer, are “not justified by all the facts.”
Burke worked at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York, at the time of the event on February 6, 2023. Burke’s behavior was investigated, and it was discovered that the Holbrook, New York nurse was working in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit and was assigned to care for the two-day infant. Long Island nurse arrested after slamming newborn into a bassinet
Tierney stated that the incident was captured on video by the infant’s father, who was standing outside the nursery. Burke was told to leave the hospital after his parents informed the nursing staff. She was fired some hours later. Burke’s registered nurse license was still active as of Thursday morning, according to public records. According to the district attorney’s statement, the office alerted relevant authorities of Burke’s charges. Burke turned herself into Suffolk County Police on Wednesday morning. “The allegations against this defendant, who is someone entrusted with the care of our most vulnerable citizens, are truly disturbing,” Tierney stated.
“I want to commend the members of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit for their hard work in this case, and together, we will continue to fight to protect the rights and safety of all Suffolk County residents.” In an email statement, Burke’s attorney, Robert C. Gottlieb, told CBS News that “this case should never have resulted in criminal charges.” “Amanda is an outstanding, exemplary, and compassionate nurse who did not and would never do anything to endanger any infant or patient under her care,” Gottlieb added. “The baby in question was never injured or in any danger of being injured.” The District Attorney’s assertions are inaccurate and are not supported by all of the facts that will be presented in court.” Gottlieb declined to answer a follow-up question about the district attorney’s claim that Burke’s actions were videotaped. Burke’s next court date is set for May 2, 2023, when she will be arraigned.
