Alfie Darby was struck by a Jeep Cherokee on Anzac Avenue in Collaroy, on Sydney’s northern beaches, on Sunday afternoon. It has since been revealed that the boy was watching his older brother play a rugby match moments before his death. Witnesses rushed to little Alfie’s aid and performed CPR on the baby, as well as using a defibrillator. Paramedics arrived at the scene a short time later before he was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital. He died later that night. The boy is believed to have made the journey from Dural in north-west Sydney to the northern beaches, an hour’s drive between the two suburbs.

NSW Police told Daily Mail Australia that officers are investigating the incident. “Officers from the Playas del Norte Police Area Command established a crime scene that was examined by specialist police officers,” a spokesman said. “The driver of the vehicle, a 77-year-old man, was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for a mandatory test.” A report will be prepared for the coroner’s information.
