Alexandra Briess, an ambitious doctor sadly died after experiencing an allergic reaction to a drug supplied to her during a regular operation. Alexandra Briess, 17, died as a result of a severe reaction to a common anesthetic while having her tonsils removed.
The ‘bright and well-loved adolescent’ took Rocuronium as part of a routine NHS operation in Reading, Berkshire, and died as a result of an ‘unpredictable’ adverse response to the medication. Senior coroner Heidi Connor is concerned that a “lack of national leadership” may result in additional allergy deaths.
Connor has written to the government, requesting more funding and research into the sickness, as well as the establishment of an allergens tsar, arguing that the “tragic” event was “not the new territory” and citing three recent examples of people dying from anaphylaxis. Alexandra, who planned to study medicine and work at a children’s charity, went into “sudden deterioration and cardiac arrest” following her first dose of the drug.

Briess received Rocuronium before dying on May 31, 2021, at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, according to the inquest. She had an uneventful tonsillectomy the week before, but she needed extra surgery on May 30 due to a postoperative hemorrhage. She felt helpless since she experienced the reaction while under anesthesia.
Friends praised her fondly as a “beautiful” girl who was a “loyal and loving friend with a great sense of humor” as they gave to a tribute page put up in her honor, raising about $11170 (£9,000). Briess is survived by her father, a retired physician, and mother, Tanya, a general practitioner practice nurse. According to reports, the household in Henley-On-Thames, Oxfordshire, which purchased their $1.86 million (£1.5 million) home in 2007, declined to comment.
