Alex Ophel, 24, was arrested after two students were stabbed at ANU in Canberra on Monday afternoon. The two women, both aged 20, were taken to hospital when emergency services arrived at the scene. One is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition. A 34-year-old man was also attacked and suffered minor injuries. He was not taken to the hospital. Ophel has not been charged for the incident. It has been revealed that Ophel had previously attacked her tutor and four of her classmates with a baseball bat when she was a student at the university in 2017. The former student, who suffers from schizophrenia, had taken the bat out of a duffel bag and started to throw it at the people in his statistics class. He knocked out the tutor, broke the arms of one student, and injured several others. A witness described Mr Ophel’s attack as using “maximum force” before he was detained. Ophel was charged with five counts of attempted murder following the wild rampage. But a jury found him not guilty due to his mental disability in 2019.

Two female students in hospital after stabbing

It is understood his schizophrenia was only diagnosed in the months after the incident. The motive for the latest attack on the university is still unknown. ACT Police and ACT Ambulance Service were called to the scene at 2.45pm. after reports of a stabbing. ANU sent an email informing staff and students of the incident this afternoon. “An individual is in police custody and there is no threat to the community,” the email said. The university had also warned students to “stay away” from Fellows Oval, which is near Chifley Library. ‘There has been an incident on campus. “Police are on scene and have the situation under control, with one individual in custody,” the university tweeted. Students received a message through the university’s security app at the time of the attack. “Police are on scene and one individual is in custody,” the alert said. “Please stay away from Fellows Oval…there is no threat to the community.” The people involved were reportedly in different areas of the university at the time. Witnesses are urged to visit the city police station or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
