A 23-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a suspected drunken crash over the weekend that left her vehicle split into several parts, according to multiple news reports. Adriana Sylmetaj died of severe traumatic injuries after being ejected from the passenger seat of a Dodge sedan when she crashed into a wooden post in Staten Island, New York at around 4:45 a.m. m. on Jan. 28, a New York police spokesperson told the Staten Island Advance.

The driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Adem Nikeziq, was later arrested and charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, among other crimes, according to CBS News.

Nikeziq suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, Fox News reports. Sylmetaj, who was pregnant at the time of impact, was pronounced dead at the scene. Although officials have not disclosed the relationship between the couple, both names appear in a Buy Buy Baby online registry. The page shows that Sylmetaj and Nikeziq were expecting a girl on April 12, 2023.

“It’s very sad. She was pregnant. The baby also died,” local resident Leonila Barnes told CBS News. Sylmetaj, originally from Brooklyn, attended the College of Staten Island and attended New Dorp High School, according to her Facebook page. She worked at Pleasant Plains Animal Hospital and NYU Langone Health, her profile shows. It was not immediately clear if Nikeziq pleaded guilty or hired an attorney to speak on her behalf.
