Aderrien Murry ‘came within an inch of losing his life’ on Saturday morning when Greg Capers shot him in the chest.
He suffered a collapsed lung, fractured ribs and a lacerated liver from the shooting and was given a chest tube and placed on a ventilator at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. His mother Nakala Murry claimed the Indianola Police Department officer had his gun drawn at the front door and shot her son as he walked around the corner of a hallway and into the living room after the cop had asked him to come outside.
The wounded boy, who is now recovering at home after being released from hospital on Wednesday, reportedly asked his mother: ‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do? Aderrien had called the police concerned about his mother’s safety when the ‘irate’ father of his half-sister arrived at their home at 4 am Saturday. He called the police for help and an officer arrived to deal with the domestic disturbance call, according to Nakala and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI).
Nakala claimed the officer ‘had his gun drawn at the front door and asked those inside the home to come outside’ before her son was shot as he walked around the hallway corner. ‘Once he came from around the corner, he got shot,’ she said in a press conference outside Indianola’s city hall annex building on Monday. ‘I cannot grasp why. The same cop that told him to come out of the house. (Aderrien) did, and he got shot.’ Nakala put her hand over her son’s wound to apply pressure while he ‘sang gospel songs and prayed while bleeding out’.

Attorney for Mississippi boy shot by police officer calls for ‘full and transparent investigation’
She claimed the officer who shot him tried to help render first aid and put his hand over hers to try to stop Aderrien’s bleeding. The medics were ‘very attentive’ when they arrived. The family’s attorney Carlos Moore claimed Aderrien ‘came within an inch of losing his life’. He said: ‘It’s not OK for a cop to do this and get away with this. ‘The mother asked Aderrien to call the police on her daughter’s father. ‘He walked out of his room as directed by the police and he got shot.’ Nakala added that the shooting took place ‘one to two minutes’ after the officer asked everyone in the house to come outside.
Her daughter and two-year-old nephew were in the house at the time of the shooting. The father of Nakala’s daughter was arrested during the day on Saturday but was released because she had not filed a police report, according to Moore. ‘When was I going to have time to do that? I was in the hospital with my son,’ Nakala said. During the emotional press conference on Monday, she held up a sign which read: ‘Your “best” cop shot my baby’. Aderrien told his friends and family he was recovering with a post on Facebook and wrote: ‘Am okay y’all.’ ‘No one came to the hospital from the police station,’ even four days after Aderrien was shot, Nakala told CNN. ‘I’m just happy my son is alive.’
Attorney Moore is furious that Capers is still employed by the Indianola Police Department and said: ‘We believe that the city and the officer should be liable to Aderrien Murray, for the damages they have caused.’ They held a sit-in protest outside Indianola City Hall on Thursday morning. Moore said his request for body camera footage of the incident to be released was rejected because of ‘an ongoing investigation.’ But he has been told there is a video of the shooting from a nearby gas station.
The Indianola Board of Aldermen voted to place Capers on paid administrative leave during the investigation, according to attorney Moore. Aderrien’s family believes this is a step in the right direction but demands that he be fired over the shooting. The MBI, which is investigating the shooting, stated on the weekend. It said it is ‘currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence‘ and would hand over its findings to the state attorney general’s office after completing the investigation.
