Without giving a specific explanation, Elon tweeted: “7-day suspension for doxing. Some time off Twitter is good for the soul…” he added in response to a follower who said they didn’t want to see anyone permanently banned. The move apparently came after Rupar published a Substack article written by Noah Berlatsky criticizing Musk, with the headline “Elon Musk’s Reactionary Populism.” “This is about hitting those who are already marginalized,” the article said.
In his defense, Aaron stated: “I have never posted anything related to Elon Jet or that would violate the location disclosure policy. Unless the policy is you criticize Elon and get banned.” Drew Harwell of “The Washington Post” stated: “Elon says he is a champion of free speech and is banning journalists from exercising free speech. I think that calls into question his commitment.”
In an interview, Aaron claimed that this move will have a chilling effect on journalists covering Elon Musk. Further, he noted, “With this new age of Twitter, it seems like people are flying out of the seat of their pants and making it up as they go. So that’s not necessarily surprising to me… [There’s] a link in the notice that he’s been permanently suspended that links to an appeal that he can file. But the link is really broken. I thought I was a little on the mark,” Aaron explained. Well, Twitter is certainly not about free speech, so be careful what you write about Elon, huh?
