Aaron Romo, 36, the suspect, has been arrested in connection with the murder of Mirelle Mateus, the 24-year-old victim, from California, whose mother found her dead after she “sensed something was wrong,” according to ABC7.
Aaron Romo of Anaheim was arrested on a murder charge last week, according to a news release from the Anaheim Police Department. He is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Mirelle Mateus, 24, from La Palma.
Authorities did not immediately release Mateus’ cause of death but believed she was murdered. Officers were called the afternoon of March 17 to an Anaheim apartment and found the victim dead inside, police said. Mateus’ mother, Alice Mateus, told ABC7 that she had a feeling something bad had happened to her daughter and went to Mateus’ ex-boyfriend’s house, where she said she made the horrific discovery after opening the front door. I was the one who found her dead in the bathroom,” she said, according to the outlet. “It wasn’t the police. The system failed me.

Romo was quickly identified as a suspect and booked into the Anaheim Police Department Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. It was not immediately clear if he pleaded guilty or hired an attorney to speak on his behalf. Investigators believe Romo has assaulted other women in the past and are asking any other potential victims to come forward. The police department declined to “elaborate on the evidence or discuss possible motives,” the statement said.
In December, Romo was charged with two felony charges: bodily harm to a spouse or cohabitant and false imprisonment, as well as misdemeanor resisting arrest and assault, Fox11 reports, citing court records. He was jailed and posted on bail, the outlet reports. It was not immediately clear if Romo had pleaded guilty to those charges. Mateus’s sister, Sandy Mateus, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the family with funeral expenses.
